Week 9 - Lighting

In Week 9 I focused on lighting and getting my scene set up for beauty shots and cinematics. I used the learning space mural on lighting techniques, which helped me understand how different types of lighting works in Unreal.

The main tip that I found useful was using Ctrl-L to reposition the angle of the sun. I found a dusky pink sunset colour fit the vibe of my tea room nicely, and accentuated its cutesy appearance. I used a couple of spotlights to illuminate the building, especially high details areas such as the front of the shop and sign. I also made sure that I cast light on my ivy, otherwise the material would appear completely black which wasn’t ideal.

I pondered about how to make the windows appear as if the light was turned on, so I added an emissive parameter and edited in within the windowpane material instances, however too much roughness detail was lost with this technique therefore I didn’t go ahead with it. I settled for adding a warm yellow light above the doorway of the shop, which radiates a welcoming energy, especially at dusk.

I created a simple circular pavement base for my building to sit on for my final cinematics next week. I made the textures in Substance Painter and, modelled it in Maya and applied the material onto it. It helps to make my building not look as if it was just floating around the scene somewhat.
